Mission

The congregation of South Plains takes seriously the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. Our members are involved in mission at the local, regional, and international levels. Of particular importance is the work of Habitat for Humanity, both in greater Charlottesville and in Fluvanna County.
Knitted
and crocheted baby caps, stuffed toys, children’s hospital gowns and slippers
are made by our members (and others) for Medical Benevolence Foundation mission
hospitals. The picture on the left shows a clothesline decorated with
1300 baby caps that were dedicated for mission hospitals in 2007. Read more about the 1831 baby caps that were dedicated
on June 22, 2008.

In April 2007 the South Plains
Session approved a proposal to enter into a Partnering relationship with the
Presbyterian Church of Grenada. St. Andrews Kirk continues to be a major mission
project for us. This lovely church was totally destroyed by Hurricane Ivan
on September 7, 2004, and to this day remains in ruin. South Plains Presbyterian
Church is helping the folks to rebuild their beloved sanctuary. Click
here to read more about the history of St. Andrews Kirk.
One couple from South Plains visited Grenada recently to deliver baby caps for the hospital as well as to lead a Christian Education program.

Youth support Souper-Bowl Sunday offerings and the “Quarter-A-Shot” collection that provides immunizations for children in mission hospitals.
The children of South Plains also have a mission project of raising money to purchase a llama through Heifer International to be donated to a needy family through that charitable organization. They have been responsible for raising money to provide several animals through the Heifer program in recent years.

South Plains also supports denominational mission programs throughout the nation and world and give generously to such programs as AIM, food banks, world disaster relief, military chaplaincy, and Presbyterian Conference Centers.
